William Handy
American journalist, university professor and global journalism coordinator
Bill is a recently retired journalism professor whose stint in academia was preceded by work as a reporter,
editor, newsroom leader and publishing executive in both mainstream media and niche-market periodicals, books and Internet.
At Northwestern University's acclaimed Medill School of Journalism (USA),
from 2007 until 2019, Bill directed the global journalism residency program,
working closely with news-organization leaders in Europe, Asia and Africa.
He regularly taught the most fundamental course in the graduate-school curriculum, News Reporting,
and one of the most advanced, an immersive media product-development capstone.
He also taught reporting on urban issues, health/environment/science and U.S. security and civil liberties.
Under his leadership, Bill's professional newsrooms were known for aggressive, objective, thorough news coverage, and in-depth public-service enterprise.
In the USA his newsroom leadership positions included Associated Press bureau chief in Chicago,
managing editor in Wichita, Kansas, and senior editor in Tampa, Florida.
In addition to teaching at Medill School of Journalism (USA), Bill has taught writing/reporting and media-product development
at a top communications university in Beijing (China),
and has consulted with major Chinese media organizations on communications, publishing strategy and product development.
Bill lives in the Chicago area (USA) and travels extensively. He and his wife are both Francophiles who visit France regularly.
